Viking Vela Tips, Secrets, and Things to Know Before You Sail
For Viking Vela, record your shore and dining windows first, then check the room position and fare benefits before buying optional extras.
Once those decisions are settled, leave enough time for the ship’s views, included spa and a meal you don’t have to rush.
Short version
Record shore and dining windows, finish online changes before seven days, verify room neighbors and invoice extras, use included spa and laundry, and arrange dietary and access needs before travel.
1. Compare the complete cost before choosing the bundle
Viking includes meals, alternative dining, one excursion per port, standard Wi-Fi, thermal spa access and self-service laundry. Compare those benefits with what you would actually buy on another line rather than automatically counting every inclusion as a saving.
Flights, transfers, optional tours, treatments and premium drinks need their own check. Use the invoice and promotional terms for your exact booking, especially when a market or special offer includes something different.
For an ordinary US booking without included gratuities, the current recommended shipboard amount is $20 per guest per night. You can prepay or have it added automatically, with changes available through Guest Services; check whether your particular reservation already includes it.
Keep a little flexibility in the spending budget for an experience you discover aboard. A well-priced bundle shouldn’t leave you feeling obliged to skip the one optional activity you’d enjoy.

2. Decide whether Deluxe benefits are enough
Basic Veranda and Deluxe Veranda share a published total of about 288 square feet including the private veranda. Deluxe mainly adds benefits and a different choice of locations, rather than a bigger ordinary room.
Price it for earlier booking access, daily nonalcoholic minibar replenishment, binoculars and a coffee machine. Keep the basic room if its saving matters more and you’re comfortable with its booking arrangements.
Penthouse Veranda adds space at about 360 square feet, while Penthouse Junior Suite rises to about 432. Don’t confuse Junior’s open sitting area with an Explorer Suite’s separate living room.
Our Vela cabin choices guide compares those upgrades. Settle the benefit you want before paying more for a name alone.
3. Put the shore window in your calendar
Shore access opens at 130 days for basic Veranda, 137 for Deluxe, 147 for Penthouse Veranda, 157 for Penthouse Junior, 167 for Explorer and 177 for Owner’s Suite. Use the date displayed for your reservation rather than a window remembered from another line.
Browse the available excursions before that date so you’re ready to choose. Check walking, stairs, standing and coach time along with the destination name.
Reserve a desirable included-tour time before assuming you can sort every port after boarding. A useful benefit still needs a place and time that suit your day.
Don’t buy a paid excursion merely because it sounds longer. Compare the specific place, access and format it adds with the included introduction or independent plans you’d otherwise make.

4. Book a dinner you’ll enjoy and leave another night open
Manfredi’s and The Chef’s Table are ordinary included alternative restaurants, with reservations required. Choose the Italian dinner or tasting theme you most want first, then work around late shore returns and performances.
Advance dining opens 60 days ahead for Deluxe, 70 for Penthouse Veranda, 80 for Penthouse Junior, 90 for Explorer and 100 for Owner’s Suite. Basic Veranda doesn’t have the same priority advance allocation.
The published allowance is one priority reservation per venue for Deluxe, two for Penthouse Veranda, three for Junior and Explorer, and four for Owner’s. Check what appears for your own cruise before planning repeats.
Earlier access isn’t a promise that every preferred table will be available. Ask about onboard openings if you haven’t secured the time you want, keeping The Restaurant and World Café as flexible options.
Our Vela dining guide helps choose those meals. You don’t need to reserve every dinner simply because the alternative restaurants have no cover charge.
5. Finish online changes before the seven-day closure
My Viking Journey closes for online changes seven days before departure. Check the important reservations before then rather than assuming you can edit everything while traveling to the ship.
If you need to cancel an excursion during that final pre-sailing week, contact Viking directly. Once aboard, ask Guest Services about adjustments and the conditions applying to the actual booking.
Optional tours have cancellation restrictions, including no refund within two days of the excursion under the current FAQ. Tours in the first two sailing days have particular nonrefundable treatment after boarding, so don’t hold an uncertain early booking casually.
Read the current booking and cancellation guidance when buying an optional experience. A tempting plan is easier to enjoy when you understand what happens if your preferences change.
6. Check the exact room overhead
Deck 6 is close to Deck 7 pools and casual meals, but the overhead footprint varies from cabins and lounges forward to pool and food areas farther aft. Inspect the exact room rather than treating the whole level as either perfect or unsuitable.
Penthouse Veranda 6074 is a PV1 example beneath the World Café area. Compare PV2 5094 on Deck 5 if you’d prefer cabins above and below, with separate quotes for the different subgrades.
Choose Deluxe Veranda 5060 when the standard-sized room is enough and you want accommodation on both neighboring levels. Keep the fare difference for an optional port experience, or pay for 5094 when its larger indoor routine is something you will enjoy each day.
Our Vela cabin cautions guide explains those decisions. An upgrade should improve the room you use, rather than exchange a carefully chosen position for a label.
7. Try the spa without buying a treatment first
The Nordic Spa thermal area and fitness center are included in the ordinary fare. Tour the Deck 1 facilities early if you want to use them, and ask the team about the available areas and posted guidance.
A sauna or Snow Grotto visit is different from a paid massage or salon appointment. Ask for the full price and cancellation terms before booking a personal service.
Fit a spa visit around the excursion you care about rather than arranging a treatment immediately after an uncertain tender return. A relaxed hour is easier to enjoy when the schedule gives it some margin.
The current included daily benefits also cover room service and laundry access. Learn what you already have before assuming another purchase is needed.

8. Compare Silver Spirits with the drinks already included
House beer, wine and soft drinks are included with onboard lunch and dinner, while coffee, tea and bottled water are part of the all-day offering. A guest mainly having wine with dinner may already have enough included.
The current US Silver Spirits terms list $27 per guest per day including a 15% service charge, with eligible drinks up to $18 and stated additional benefits. Both guests must purchase for the full trip, and the package is nonrefundable.
Guests must be 21 or older to purchase and consume alcoholic beverages under those terms. Don’t confuse Vela’s 18-and-over passenger policy with eligibility to buy an alcoholic package.
For two eligible guests on a seven-day cruise, the published daily rate totals $378. Compare that with your actual additional orders, and check whether an Owner’s Suite or specific promotion already includes the package.
9. Use free laundry to pack a repeatable wardrobe
Self-service laundry rooms are available on accommodation levels, without an entry-level cabin surcharge. Check the nearest location during your first walk so washing clothes doesn’t become a last-day discovery.
Start a load when you can return promptly, and keep voices down near neighboring rooms. Check what supplies are provided before filling your luggage with laundry products you won’t need.
Penthouse Junior and higher suites list full laundry services, while Penthouse Veranda lists pressing and shoe shine. Choose the upgrade for the service you will use rather than assuming every Penthouse label means all washing is included.
Keep something clean available while clothes are being processed. Sending every useful outfit at once can make a convenient service less useful the following morning.
10. Try a different breakfast before repeating the buffet
Mamsen’s in forward Explorers’ Lounge is worth a waffle breakfast when its service fits your morning. Try the Norwegian brown-cheese accompaniment if you’re curious, then choose what you enjoy.
World Café aft on Deck 7 offers the broader breakfast choice. Walk the available stations before making a plate, particularly when you’re learning Vela’s layout for the first time.
For an early shore meeting, choose the venue and meal that fit the actual serving time. A made-to-order or delivered breakfast needs more margin than collecting something already available.
Check the menu and hours in Viking Daily rather than assuming a counter opens whenever you reach it. Food being included doesn’t mean every choice is continuously serving.
11. Pick the pool and outdoor table for the weather
The Main Pool has a retractable roof, while the aft infinity pool and hot tub are open-air choices. Visit the setting that feels comfortable that day instead of insisting the most photogenic one must be best.
Aquavit Terrace is outdoor dining associated with World Café. Choose shade or shelter when available and move indoors when wind or cold makes the meal less pleasant.
The forward Sports Deck on Deck 9 is a small upper area, rather than a full-ship walking circuit. The Deck 2 promenade gives you another route, with posted closures controlling actual use.
Pack a layer you can reach easily before sailaway. A warm afternoon at the pier doesn’t establish how an exposed table will feel after the ship gets moving.

12. Learn Decks 1, 2 and 7 once
Deck 1 places the spa forward, the Living Room and Guest Services centrally, and alternative dinners aft. Deck 2 connects the forward Theater with Torshavn and the aft Restaurant.
Deck 7 runs from forward Explorers’ Lounge and Mamsen’s through Wintergarden and the Main Pool toward aft World Café and Aquavit Terrace. Choose the correct elevator bank before going up or down.
Our Vela deck guide shows those repeated routes. Agree on a precise meeting point with its deck rather than relying entirely on phone messages.
If stairs suit your mobility, they can be useful for short trips when elevators are busy. If you need a step-free route, confirm it with the team rather than letting someone else’s shortcut determine your walk.
13. Arrange dietary and access needs before travel
Viking asks guests needing special meals to notify the line 90 days before departure, then speak with the maître d’ aboard. Use the appropriate My Viking Journey page or contact channel rather than leaving an important requirement to the first restaurant visit.
For access requirements, arrange the relevant form and confirmations early, ideally at booking and at least 60 days ahead for special services. Submitting a form doesn’t itself approve a particular device, transfer or excursion.
Accessible Penthouse Junior rooms 6020 and 6021 need checking against your actual equipment and layout requirements. Tender ports are a separate concern, and Viking tenders cannot accommodate motorized scooters or motorized wheelchairs.
Ask about the whole route before finalizing the trip. A suitable room isn’t enough if the gangway, coach or tender prevents the shore experience you wanted.
14. Pack for elegant casual and the real itinerary
Viking has no formal nights, but the evening dressier venues require elegant casual with no jeans. A jacket and tie are optional, while World Café remains casual after 6 p.m.
Pack comfortable walking clothes and the layers your route needs before adding extra dinner outfits. If tours include religious sites, check the coverage requirements in the actual excursion description.
Keep documents, medication, chargers and essential clothing in hand luggage. Published room-access times vary by category, so you may spend part of embarkation day using the public spaces before settling in.
Every guest must be at least 18 by embarkation. A suite booking doesn’t create an exception for a younger family member.

15. Keep tomorrow’s essentials available offline
Download documents and important maps before leaving home. Included Wi-Fi can vary in speed, so don’t make an essential boarding or return arrangement depend on reaching a website at the last minute.
Before leaving the ship, confirm its required all-aboard time, the return route and the ship’s contact instructions. Allow enough margin for local transport or tender arrangements rather than assuming every clock shows ship time.
Choose one useful briefing or activity from the next day’s program and leave some space around it. The best preparation should give you more freedom to enjoy Vela’s meals, music and views once you’re there.
How this guide was researched
We compared Vela’s numbered accommodation and public-space plans with its room benefits, dining, enrichment and US booking policies. Published room areas include verandas; individual menus, programs and excursion arrangements follow the booked sailing.
