Carnival Sunshine Tips, Secrets & Things to Know: Mistakes to Avoid Before Sailing
Carnival Sunshine’s best shortcuts are the three Serenity levels, breakfast seating near Havana Bar, and the included pasta lunch inside Cucina’s paid dinner space.
Learn those spaces first, then choose the pool timing, entertainment, and cabin position that suits your own daily routine.
Short version
Walk every Serenity level, try Havana seating when the buffet is busy, and find the included Captain’s Pasta Bar lunch in Cucina. For a Norfolk departure, CHEERS starts at 6 AM on Day 2; protect the first-night drink budget and bring useful layers for the actual route.
The three-level Serenity deck is the feature to explore
Use the pool level of Serenity when water time matters, then try a higher tier for reading and a different outlook. Walk between them before settling in for the day.
Carnival Sunshine has one of the most distinctive Serenity Adult-Only Retreats in the fleet, spread across three decks with loungers, cabanas, hot tubs, a waterfall, and a small plunge-style pool. It is not simply a fenced-off corner of Lido with an adults-only sign.
The Serenity retreat is included for guests 21 and older. You do not need a spa cabin or a separate pass to use Sunshine’s adult outdoor space.
Even this large retreat has limited cabanas and shaded seats. Arrive earlier when one matters, then move between tiers as wind, sun and the crowd change.

Try Havana Bar seating at breakfast
Sunshine’s Havana Bar is a public lounge beside the aft food area, so you can use it without a special cabin. Carry breakfast here when the tables nearest Lido Marketplace feel hectic.
Get food first, then walk toward Havana Bar and see whether the seating is calmer. The room is bright, aft-facing, and much easier to enjoy when you are not circling the buffet with a plate in one hand and a coffee in the other.
Return later for the room’s music or dancing when it is scheduled. The same space can make a useful breakfast retreat and a lively evening destination.
For breakfast itself, BlueIguana Cantina is another strong alternative to a buffet-only routine when operating. Made-to-order breakfast burritos and huevos rancheros are especially useful when you want food quickly and plan to head outside afterward.
Sea Day Brunch is the opposite move. Use it when the morning has nowhere to be, and let somebody bring the food instead of spending another breakfast moving through a self-service line.
JiJi is the dinner to compare for Asian variety
JiJi Asian Kitchen is one of Sunshine’s strongest specialty restaurants and a much more interesting splurge than buying a paid dinner simply because it has steak on the menu. The family-style approach works best when the group is willing to share dishes and try more than one flavor.
Ask the server for help balancing appetizers, mains, and spice levels. Ordering six versions of the safest-looking entrée rather defeats the point of choosing JiJi.
Cucina del Capitano hosts the included Captain’s Pasta Bar during its scheduled lunch service, then changes to a paid Italian dinner. A JiJi Asian/Mongolian Wok lunch has appeared in past Sunshine programs, but check HUB for your sailing’s current daytime setup and inclusion before counting on it.
Find both rooms on Deck 9, aft of Lido Marketplace near Havana Bar. You do not need to climb to an upstairs restaurant deck, so walk aft through the Lido area and learn the entrances before carrying a full plate there.
Fahrenheit 555 is the traditional steakhouse alternative when the group wants a more familiar special meal. Compare the actual booking price and menu with JiJi or Cucina before reserving, rather than choosing solely because the steakhouse is the most recognizable splurge.

The Beach Pool is too small to be your only pool strategy
Sunshine’s main Lido pool area is undersized for the number of guests who want it on a warm sea day. Expect the center of Lido to feel busy around midday and plan alternatives before the chair search becomes the activity.
Families should decide whether the actual goal is swimming, WaterWorks, or sitting near the big screen. Those are three different needs, and insisting on one chair that perfectly serves all three is how a simple pool morning becomes a search mission.
WaterWorks is the stronger family water attraction, with colorful slides and splash features. Check the current height and participation rules before promising a particular slide, then use the first reasonable line instead of saving everything for the middle of the sea day.
Adults should use Serenity as a pressure valve, while families can move toward another activity when the pool deck peaks. Sunshine is small enough that leaving and returning later does not require a fifteen-minute neighborhood migration.
Early morning and late afternoon remain the easiest pool windows. A 5:30 p.m. swim while half the ship is dressing for dinner can feel completely different from the same water at 1:00 p.m.
For a Norfolk sailing, budget Day 1 drinks and pack for the route
For a Norfolk departure, pack for the actual route and season. A Bahamas, Bermuda or Canada voyage can call for different layers and outdoor expectations.
For a Norfolk departure, CHEERS begins at 6 AM on the second day, with first-day drinks charged separately. Include that first afternoon and evening in the drinks budget instead of expecting the prepaid package to work as soon as you board.
For Bahamas departures, swimsuits and sun protection obviously matter. For Canada or shoulder-season Bermuda, you should add real layers and expect the first or final sea day to make Serenity, outdoor movies, and WaterWorks much more weather-dependent.
This is where Sunshine’s many indoor bars and lounges become more useful. Library Bar, Ocean Plaza, Piano Bar, Havana Bar, Alchemy, and the theater give you enough inside space to have a full day when the Atlantic is not interested in pool weather.
Arrive in Norfolk the day before when flying. The terminal may be easier than some Florida mega-ports, but a same-day airline delay remains perfectly capable of ruining a smaller-ship vacation.

Alchemy Bar and the Library Bar solve two completely different evenings
Alchemy Bar is the obvious adult cocktail venue when the drink itself is part of the fun. Tell the bartender what flavors you like rather than choosing by a clever menu name, and ask about a zero-proof version if you want the experience without alcohol.
Try The Library Bar when a quieter indoor drink suits the evening. On a cold or rainy day, this smaller room can be a useful break from the busy pool-and-entertainment circuit.
Ocean Plaza is the better choice when live music is the point, while Piano Bar works when you want a singalong. Choose the room based on the performer and mood that evening instead of assigning one permanent winner before sailing.
Sunshine’s entertainment strength is not one giant headline production. It is having several smaller ways to spend the evening without needing a reservation.
That is why it helps to leave at least two nights loose. A good piano player or band can become the highlight only if your schedule allows you to stay after you realize the room is good.
Punchliner is the room to arrive early for
Carnival comedy remains one of Sunshine’s most reliable included entertainment draws, and the more popular adult sets can fill. If a specific show matters, arrive before the comedian rather than after the room has already made the seating decision for you.
Family-friendly sets can work well before dinner, while later shows are more adult. Read the age guidance in HUB instead of assuming every comedy performance is interchangeable.
Playlist Productions in the main theater are the larger song-and-dance option. Choose the show whose music appeals and skip the others without guilt, especially on a port-heavy itinerary.
If comedy is already full, use the crowd as an opportunity. A packed Punchliner means hundreds of people are not at Alchemy, the piano bar, Serenity, or whichever other venue you were considering.

Choose the room for sleep and your daily route
A central Deck 7 room is the simplest Sunshine starting point when sleep matters more than the shortest pool trip. Keep a higher or more unusual room for a specific feature, such as a balcony you will use or a separate sleeping area.
Choose a residential buffer over a direct theater, nightclub or pool-deck boundary when fares are similar. Then let your most frequent destination decide which elevator bank should be closest.
Some lower or mid-level cabins can be excellent values because the ship is not enormous and elevators are traditional rather than destination-assigned. A slightly lower room can still keep dining and entertainment very convenient.
For a qualifying Cloud 9 Spa cabin, the included thermal-suite pass and listed spa benefits apply to the first two adults in the room. Sunshine has thermal rooms rather than a hydrotherapy pool, so compare the cabin premium with buying only the spa access you would actually use.
A useful first-day Sunshine plan
After muster and a first meal, choose one short orientation walk. Find the spaces you will use repeatedly before adding reservations and extras.
Locate Havana Bar seating, JiJi, Cucina and the comedy club, then learn the route between your cabin and Decks 5 and 9. Families should add WaterWorks and the youth spaces; adults can finish with the Serenity tiers.
Before dinner, check the weather for the next day because a Norfolk-based Bahamas cruise and a Canada cruise need completely different outdoor plans. Then protect one comedy or theater event and leave the rest open.

Keep planning Carnival Sunshine
The best cabin guide compares what the room provides, while the cabin cautions explain its neighboring spaces. Use both before treating a higher category as the better purchase.
The Sunshine dining guide explains the included pasta lunch and paid dinners. Keep the meal you want separate from the venue name so a specialty room does not hide a useful included lunch.
How this guide was researched
We used Carnival’s Sunshine plan, dining and spa information, and the Norfolk CHEERS rule for these shortcuts. Weather and port advice depend on the route actually booked.
