Norwegian Encore Tips, Secrets & Things to Know: Useful Advice Without the Fluff

On a Norwegian Encore Alaska sailing, you should reserve The Choir of Man, have a Glacier Bay viewing backup if the park is on the itinerary, and understand Ward Cove before Ketchikan morning.

Spice H2O, Speedway, and Galaxy Pavilion all deserve a look, but the scenery should set the schedule.

Short version

  • Best first move: Choir of Man deserves the first entertainment reservation.
  • Worth planning: Glacier Bay needs a viewing plan, but not a chair war.
  • Easy win: Spice H2O is the adult space worth learning.
  • Important tradeoff: Ward Cove makes Ketchikan shorter than the clock makes it look.
  • Cabin strategy: Choose a Norwegian Encore cabin near the spaces you will repeat, then check the rooms and venues directly above and below it.

Choir of Man gets your first entertainment reservation

The Choir of Man is the Encore show you should protect first. The live vocals, pub setting, musicianship, and audience energy feel more distinctive than a generic cruise revue, so check available performance times before filling the evenings with dinner reservations.

Choose the best performance time first, then fit specialty dinner around it rather than doing the reverse. Encore has many restaurants and one Choir of Man.

Arrive early enough to get seats together without turning the queue into an all-evening event. Beatles tribute sets, comedy, and other popular shows can fill quickly too, so a little early arrival goes much farther than discovering the room is standing-room-only after showtime.

Beatles Invasion or another Beatles-style tribute is the second entertainment listing you should check. The exact performer lineup can change by sailing, so use the daily program instead of building the cruise around a group name from a different week.

Leave at least one evening completely unbooked for live music or comedy. Encore’s smaller entertainment rooms often get good only after you are already there, which is hard to enjoy when your phone is reminding you to leave in twelve minutes.

Glacier Bay needs a viewing plan, but not a chair war

If your itinerary includes Glacier Bay, plan that day more carefully than any onboard attraction. National Park Service rangers board for commentary, and glaciers, wildlife, mountains, and changing light reward leaving room in the schedule.

The Observation Lounge is beautiful and exactly where many people want to be. On scenic mornings, the best seats can become semi-permanent living rooms with blankets, books, breakfast plates, and people settled in for hours.

Arrive early enough to enjoy the lounge, but never make one seat your only Glacier Bay plan. The ship typically turns so both sides receive major views, and outside viewing areas can be much better for photos and for actually hearing the glacier crack without glass between you and the sound.

Deck 8 forward-side areas and the bow, when opened by the ship for scenic viewing, can give you excellent alternatives. The top deck is another option if you dress for wind instead of dressing for the temperature you saw in Seattle.

If you have a balcony, follow the announcements about the ship’s position and be ready to move to a public deck when the view is on the other side. Your own chair is useful, but neither side of the ship guarantees the best angle throughout the day.

Spice H2O is the adult space worth learning

Spice H2O is a complimentary outdoor retreat for guests 18 and older during its adult-only daytime operation. The aft space gives you another option when the main pool deck feels busy.

Use Spice H2O as the free alternative to the main family pool deck, especially on a sunny sea day or warmer itinerary. The space gives adults seating, bar access, and an aft outdoor area without buying Vibe or a spa pass.

Check the posted age and evening rules because the venue can transition into broader events after the daytime adult period. A quiet afternoon deck can become an entertainment space later, which is part of why you should visit more than once.

On Alaska sailings, weather may make Spice less important than the Observation Lounge or Thermal Suite. On a sunny afternoon, though, having an included adult deck is a much better option than orbiting the main pool for a chair.

Vibe offers paid, capacity-controlled access if you want a smaller shared outdoor area, but it does not guarantee silence. If you simply want an adult outdoor break, try Spice before assuming an upgrade is necessary.

Ward Cove makes Ketchikan shorter than the clock makes it look

When your Ketchikan call is at Ward Cove, include the terminal shuttle in your shore plan rather than expecting to walk straight into downtown. The Ward Cove timetable separates the last downtown shuttle from ship departure, so treat transportation as real port time.

Read and screenshot the day’s shuttle instructions before leaving the ship, including the downtown pickup location and last return departure. Use the instructions for your actual call, since a previous sailing’s clock times are not a safe return plan.

If booking an independent excursion, tell the operator you are on Norwegian Encore at Ward Cove and confirm who is responsible for getting you back. A tour company that drops guests directly at the ship can be much more valuable than one that ends downtown beside a gift shop and a shrinking shuttle window.

Get off early when the Ketchikan call is short. Waiting an hour for breakfast onboard because you assume the town is directly outside the gangway can consume a surprisingly large share of the usable visit.

The shuttle is not necessarily a bad experience, and the ride can include useful local context along the way. Just count that transportation as real port time instead of mentally erasing it from the schedule.

The Speedway is much easier to enjoy when it is not competing with Alaska

Encore Speedway is one of the ship’s headline paid attractions, and it can be fun enough that families talk about it long after the cruise. Protect the best scenic hours of an Alaska day, then race when the view is less important.

Reserve a session when weather looks workable and when the itinerary is not passing something you traveled thousands of miles to see. A go-kart track exists in other places; Glacier Bay does not.

Use an earlier cruise slot if the Speedway genuinely matters. Weather and operations can move or limit sessions, and your last chance is a poor place for uncertainty.

For Encore, NCL’s Speedway requirements list a driver height of 4 feet 7 inches to 6 feet 10 inches, with flat, fully enclosed shoes required. Confirm the weight limit and two-person kart passenger eligibility with the crew before paying, and secure long hair and loose items as instructed.

If nobody in your cabin loves go-karts, save the money. Encore has enough included scenery and entertainment that a paid race should be a genuine preference rather than a checklist item you feel obligated to complete.

Use Galaxy Pavilion when virtual reality genuinely interests you

Galaxy Pavilion is Encore’s virtual-reality arcade and simulator complex. Treat it as a weather-proof activity for people who enjoy the technology, not as a mandatory use of ship time.

Treat Galaxy Pavilion as a paid bad-weather or kid-priority activity, not a universal must-do. Check individual-game and package pricing because the economics can change quickly depending on how much time your family actually wants to spend in virtual reality.

It becomes much more appealing on a rainy Alaska afternoon when the top deck is unpleasant. On a clear Glacier Bay morning, you should be outside looking at actual mountains rather than paying to wear a headset indoors.

Have children look at the attraction descriptions before buying a larger package. If they only care about one simulator, unlimited access can be a very expensive way to learn that their interest was highly specific.

The arcade elsewhere onboard follows the same logic. Set a budget before the first swipe rather than discovering the total after several days of tiny transactions that felt harmless one at a time.

Garden Café crowding is predictable, so have The Local ready

Garden Café seating gets tight at peak times, and Alaska makes the problem worse when cold weather pushes everyone indoors and multiple excursions create the same breakfast rush. Treat the buffet as one option, not the default answer to every meal.

Shift breakfast earlier when the port schedule allows, use Taste or Savor when a sit-down meal is open, and memorize The Local on Deck 7 for included pub-style food outside normal meal peaks.

If outdoor buffet tables are open and the weather is comfortable, check there before circling the interior with a full plate. Bring a layer and choose the sheltered side rather than assuming every outdoor seat will be warm.

Taste and Savor feel smaller and calmer than the buffet when they are open for breakfast or dinner. The Manhattan Room adds a larger, livelier included dining experience and works well when the group wants dinner to feel more like an event.

Check restaurant operating hours every morning. Port schedules can change lunch and breakfast service, and the dining room that saved you yesterday may not be available at the same time today.

Palomar and Onda are the specialty restaurants to compare first

Palomar emphasizes seafood and Mediterranean flavors, while Onda by Scarpetta is the Italian-leaning specialty option. Choose between them by menu and mood rather than assuming every Breakaway Plus ship has the same restaurant lineup.

Palomar is your choice when seafood and Mediterranean flavors sound like the meal. Onda is the better fit when the group wants handmade pasta, Italian dishes, and a slower evening without defaulting to the steakhouse.

Cagney’s remains the classic steakhouse, while Teppanyaki is the dinner to book when the cooking show is part of the value. Choose the two specialty restaurants you are genuinely excited about rather than assuming a seven-night Alaska cruise needs a large collection of paid dinners.

Free at Sea benefits and dining allowances depend on the fare attached to the reservation. Check the fare benefits and any extra charges before reserving meals around a package name.

A package is not savings if it turns the week into an obligation to eat another large dinner after a long port day. Pick the meals you want first, then see which benefits cover them.

Unlimited Wi-Fi does not always mean unlimited streaming

Standard unlimited internet and video streaming are not necessarily the same product on Encore. Streaming access can require a different or more expensive package, which matters if your definition of “unlimited” includes YouTube, live sports, or video-heavy apps.

Read the package description before buying and ask exactly what is included if streaming matters. The word unlimited refers to the terms NCL is selling, not to every possible type of internet traffic your phone can generate.

For a Seattle departure, download entertainment, maps, excursion confirmations, and travel documents while shore connectivity is reliable. Alaska coverage can be inconsistent, so keep essentials available offline and leave Glacier Bay free for the scenery instead of a password reset.

The NCL app’s local onboard functions do not require a paid internet session, although your device must connect to the ship’s Wi-Fi. With a limited-minute internet plan, visit nclwifi.com and select logout when finished; airplane mode does not end that session for you.

Also screenshot show and dining reservations. Technology is a wonderful place to store a schedule until technology decides you have been signed out.

The Observation Lounge is fantastic until everybody brings a blanket

The forward Observation Lounge is worth revisiting outside the busiest scenic hours. Try it during a port afternoon when you stay aboard or after dinner, when the window view is no longer everyone’s priority.

Use the lounge for reading, a quiet conversation when the room allows it, and scheduled music as well as scenic viewing. Check the daily program for food service and performances instead of treating the room as a permanent breakfast buffet.

For ranger talks or other Alaska presentations, follow the venue and time listed in the daily program. Arrive before the start if hearing the speaker matters, and choose a seat near the presentation rather than assuming commentary will be equally clear everywhere.

At night, the lounge can become a much calmer place with live music and fewer scenery-driven chair disputes. Visit after dark at least once because the atmosphere is almost the opposite of Glacier Bay morning.

If Observation Lounge camping makes you angry, step outside. Alaska is quite literally larger than the room.

The Waterfront is where to go when the lounge and buffet both feel full

The Waterfront gives Encore outdoor seating, dining, bars, and side views along Deck 8. On a dry Alaska day, it is one of the easiest places to get away from indoor crowds without climbing to the exposed top deck.

Wear layers and walk both sides. Wind can make one side miserable and the other surprisingly comfortable, especially when the ship’s direction shelters part of the promenade.

For Glacier Bay, The Waterfront gives you a side-view alternative to the Observation Lounge. For an ordinary sea day, it gives you something even more valuable: a chair near the water that nobody had to reserve months ago.

Ask about outdoor seating at specialty restaurants when the weather is suitable. Eating beside Alaska can be wonderful; eating beside forty-degree rain because you refused to surrender the idea is just stubborn.

The Waterfront is also one of the few places where Encore’s size feels like an advantage. The long outdoor edge gives you room to move until you find a view rather than competing for one famous window.

Check cabin access and walking distances before booking

Stateroom corridors can feel tight when housekeeping carts and two-way traffic meet. For a wheelchair, scooter, or stroller, check the exact cabin’s doorway and access arrangements as well as the walking distance to useful elevators.

Choose the cabin’s horizontal location as carefully as the category. A room twenty cabins from the elevator can feel much farther when corridor traffic is slow or mobility equipment is involved.

Club Balcony Suites can offer a larger bathroom, but the word suite does not give you Haven access. Read the exact room benefits before paying a premium because NCL’s category names can sound more dramatic than the service difference.

The Haven is the true ship-within-a-ship upgrade, with private dining, lounge, courtyard or sun-deck access, concierge, and butler service. It can change the crowd experience substantially, especially when the public buffet and Observation Lounge feel busy.

Use the cabin category guide to compare what the room itself provides, then work through the cabin-location checklist for noise, movement, and walking risks. Apply those general checks to your exact room on the ship plan before booking.

Continue planning with the deck guide.

How this guide was researched: This guide was checked against the cruise line’s current ship pages, deck plans, venue listings, and published policies. Details can change by sailing, so confirm booking-sensitive prices, hours, access rules, and cabin assignments before payment.

Passengers relaxing in the Norwegian Encore Observation Lounge

Your first-day Encore plan

After boarding, complete the required safety briefing and muster-station check-in, connect to the NCL app, and verify show, attraction, dining, or spa reservations. Then ask which complimentary dining room is serving lunch and walk the Observation Lounge, Spice H2O, The Waterfront, and the route from your cabin to the nearest practical elevator.

If the Speedway matters and the weather is good, use an early slot rather than saving it for later. For an itinerary visiting Glacier Bay, identify two viewing alternatives before scenic day so a crowded Observation Lounge cannot ruin the morning.

If you are comparing ships before booking, the ship-guide directory shows which other ships have full coverage. Compare the spaces you would actually use instead of assuming sister ships share every attraction.

Encore is a very good Alaska ship when Alaska stays in charge of the schedule. See Choir of Man, race the go-karts if you want to, enjoy Spice H2O, but do not spend Glacier Bay inside a virtual-reality headset because a package convinced you that you needed to maximize it.

Keep planning with the Encore pros and cons, cabins to avoid, and Encore dining guide.
